Pencil It In | Holy Grail Rules to Perfect Your Lip Liner

Dreaming of a fuller pout? The perfect Lip that will last ALL day long? Well, forget the lip-fillers and tattoos, and let me reintroduce you to the OG makeup product that can do all the above and keep it natural, the Lip Pencil

A good lip pencil acts as a base for your lipstick and will keep it from bleeding, as well as ensuring your lips look fresh all day long. And, if you know how to use it right, help you create a fuller lip. It’s time to walk you through the best tips and tricks to work your lip pencil right.

Moisturising Is Key

First things first ladies, if you’re going to nail your lip liner you need to make sure you have a good foundation first (and I don’t mean the kind you put on your skin). I’m talking about making sure your lips are supple and soft before you apply your liner.  Have you ever tried to apply a lip liner with dry, cracked lips? I don’t think you need me to tell you, that it’s the worst! Just like you would apply primer to your skin before you apply any other product, it’s always a good idea to moisturise your lips first.

Tip: If you want to get rid of the dead skin from your lips, you can always run a soft, dry (preferably unused!!!) toothbrush gently along your lips.

Bonus, Mellow Gel Lip Pencils have a gel formula that allows the product to glide onto your lips with ease.

Get That Natural Plump

Okay now that we have the basics down, it’s time to talk about the plump. Beautiful full lips have been desirable since the beginning of time and that’s not going to change anytime soon, thanks Kylie Jenner ha-ha. And I’m sure like most, myself included, you’ve been very tempted to go a little over the top, or rather outside of the lines, when it comes to lining your lips. And, that’s never a good look. And yet how do those influencers nail it every time? I’ll tell you a secret, the perfect lip liner, natural plump is achievable!

The key is to keep the overline to two areas, along your cupids bow and underneath your bottom lip, and then bring the liner back in along the sides of your lips. When you overline your entire lip it looks exactly like that, that you’ve overlined your lips and it becomes a bit the-Joker-from-Batman-ish. But, if you keep it to those two areas, you’ll achieve a more natural, full look.

Get the Motion Right

Now we’re ready to apply our Lip Liner! As much as it’s not brain science, there is a simple technique to apply lip liner, that will have you nailing it every time. For the top lip, start at the corner of your lip and work, in a backwards and forth motion, slowly towards the centre. Once you’ve reached the centre, do the same on the other side, making sure to keep that motion going. If you like, you can mark out your cupids bow with a cross first, as to give you a better guide but that’s up to you. Now for your bottom lip, start at the centre of your bottom lip (this is the fullest part of your lip), use the same motion, and move slowly outwards.

Once you’ve nailed the technique, there’s no lip you won't be able to line with to perfection.
